Process
The wares are formed on the potters’ wheel from a stoneware clay, and are often altered by cutting and reassembling parts to create compound forms. I use coloured slips of my own formulation for decoration on the unfired clay. I carve into the slips using sgraffito and also build up layers by painting and trailing. The decoration adds texture and becomes an integral part of the body of the piece.
After the initial bisque firing, the pieces are covered with a clear glaze and fired to Cone 6 in an electric kiln.
